On 24 August 2022, the Embassy of Ukraine together with the Ukrainian community in Denmark, Ukrainian resettlers and Danish friends in Copenhagen celebrated the most important holiday for our Homeland – Ukraine’s Independence Day.
Festive events began in the Østre Anlæg Park with the laying of flowers at the monument to Taras Shevchenko.
The mass gathering began with a viche near the Danish Folketing. Ambassador of Ukraine to Denmark Mykhailo Vydoinyk, Chairman of the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark Andrii Kuzmyn, Chairman of the Foreign Policy Council of the Folketing Martin Lidegaard, and Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Denmark Tom Axelgaard addressed the audience with a welcoming speeches.
The march through the streets of Copenhagen was held under the slogan “Thank you Denmark for your support”. More than a thousand participants joined the action to express gratitude to the Danes for the political, humanitarian, financial and military assistance that Ukraine so desperately needs in fight against the Russian occupiers. The National Anthem of Ukraine and the song “Oi u luzi chervona kalyna” were solemnly performed near the Ukrainian Embassy, after which the procession continued to the Sankt Ansgars Kirke, where a Prayer for Ukraine was held in the presence of priests of various denominations.
At the end of the Prayer, a solemn concert was held by the Kyiv Children’s Choir “Shchedryk” which is in Denmark as part of its tour. The choir’s magical performance of world-famous works, including “Prayer for Ukraine” by Mykola Lysenko, “Rain” by Roman Kofman, “Christus factus est” by Felice Anerio, made the audience plunge into the world of professional academic music and choral singing. The choir’s performance was filled with positive emotions and ovations from the grateful audience particularly presented by 20 foreign diplomatic missions.
We are grateful to the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark, the Volunteer Union “Bevar Ukraine”, UGCC Ukrainian Spiritual Guidance in Denmark, Kyiv Children’s Choir “Schedryk”, “TV 2”, “TV 2 Lorry”, “DR1”, “DR P1”, “DR P4”, as well as to all Ukrainians, Danes and guests of our holiday for the wonderful opportunity to celebrate together the 31st anniversary of the reestablishment of Ukraine’s Independence.
