Denmark is a consistent and principled ally of Ukraine in countering Russian aggression. By the end of 2024, the country ranks among the top five states worldwide in terms of military support for Ukraine. Throughout the war, Denmark has delivered 23 military aid packages, demonstrating consistent and strategic support for Ukrainian resistance.
Danish assistance covers a wide range of weapons and military equipment, including armored vehicles, drones, air defense systems, and other equipment. The distinctive feature of Danish support is not only material and technical provision but comprehensive training of Ukrainian military personnel.
The transfer of F-16 fighters has become a symbol of Danish military support – the first Western combat aviation for Ukraine, which dramatically enhanced Ukrainian air defense capabilities. Comprehensive training of Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel is also underway.
Denmark has sent military instructors to the United Kingdom to train Ukrainian defenders as part of the Operation Interflex program, and also conducts training courses for Ukrainian military personnel on its territory.
Denmark transferred armored vehicles to Ukraine – Leopard tanks, T-72 tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and participated in creating a technical maintenance base. Artillery support included CAESAR howitzers. Denmark transferred its entire available artillery batch and financed the purchase of additional howitzers. A unique project involved producing Bohdan self-propelled howitzers directly in Ukraine. Denmark systematically helps Ukraine with air defense systems and ammunition.
Denmark participates in eight international support coalitions for Ukraine, including artillery, armored, aviation, IT, air defense, drone, demining, and maritime capabilities coalitions. This allows for comprehensive and systematic support of Ukraine's defense capabilities.
In March 2023, the Danish government established a special National Support Fund for Ukraine, ensuring long-term military, humanitarian, and economic assistance. The country was the first to introduce a unique mechanism of direct weapons procurement from Ukrainian manufacturers (the "Danish model").
A key support direction is training Ukrainian military personnel according to NATO standards, particularly at Danish military airbases and training centers. Denmark also contributes to developing cyber resilience in Ukrainian defense structures and supports modernization of the domestic defense industry.
On February 23, 2024, a Security Cooperation Agreement was signed, providing a ten-year support strategy for Ukraine, including defense industry development, intelligence cooperation, and facilitating accountability for aggression crimes.
Danish military assistance is viewed not only as support for Ukraine but as a crucial element of ensuring European security, deterring Russian aggression, and protecting the international legal order.
