Regional Cooperation and Recovery
30 December 2024 13:00

Ukraine and Denmark are actively developing cooperation at various levels, paying significant attention to the regional dimension of their partnership. The processes of recovery and reconstruction following the full-scale Russian invasion have become a powerful catalyst for deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.

An important component of international cooperation has been the sister city relationships between Ukrainian and Danish cities. The tradition of such relations spans decades. In particular, the sister city relationship between Ukraine's capital Kyiv and the Danish city of Odense was established in 1989. In 2023, the network of sister city connections significantly expanded, establishing partnerships between Copenhagen and Kyiv, Mykolaiv and Aalborg, Lviv and Aarhus, Nikopol and Kolding, as well as between Voznesensk and Ikast.

On March 29, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Danish parliament with an initiative to take patronage over the reconstruction of Mykolaiv. On April 21, 2022, during the visit of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to Kyiv, an agreement was reached that Denmark would lead the city's reconstruction process together with international partners.

On March 7, 2023, a Memorandum was signed to create a partnership between Denmark, Mykolaiv, and the Mykolaiv region. A Steering Committee was established to coordinate cooperation, which conducts meetings 2-4 times a year.

Denmark identified eight priority areas of cooperation: infrastructure, good governance and transparency, shipping, transportation, urban planning, small and medium business development, green transition, and promoting culture and youth engagement.

On January 26, 2024, to strengthen institutional support, a Danish embassy office was opened directly in Mykolaiv.

Assistance includes transferring equipment for infrastructure repair, supplying construction machinery, supporting the energy sector, restoring water supply and heating systems, demining projects, and educational initiatives.

Important stages of cooperation included mutual visits. On January 30, 2023, the top leadership of Denmark visited Mykolaiv.

The partnership between Ukraine and Denmark demonstrates consistent support for recovery and development processes, serving as an example of effective international cooperation and solidarity in overcoming the consequences of war.
