“On the fourth Saturday of November, we recall a dark chapter in the history of Ukraine, when about four million Ukrainians lost their lives at the hands of the totalitarian communist regime of the Soviet Union.
The Soviet authorities systematically killed the Ukrainian nation by creating an artificial mass famine. Communist executioners confiscated everything edible from Ukrainian peasants and severely restricted freedom of movement so that Ukrainians could not find salvation in other regions.
The world community could help the starving population of Ukraine, but the organizers of the crime silenced the truth about the Holodomor, deliberately misinformed the world community and blocked attempts of foreign aid.
We will always remember the victims of the Holodomor. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine condemned the communist totalitarian regime and opened full access to the archives of the Soviet repressive bodies so that the history of the Holodomor would never again be the object of censorship and manipulation.
We want the truth about the Holodomor to be known all over the world. Not only known, but also recognized as a crime against humanity. A range of countries that have recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people is expanding every year. I am sure that Denmark will join it over time.
And today, Ukrainians around the world light candles and observe a moment of silence for all those who died of starvation on the fertile Ukrainian soil”.
