Seven documentaries about Ukraine are presented at the Copenhagen Documentary Film Festival 2022
31 March 2022 11:00

The Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival CPH:DOX, which this year runs from 23 March to 3 April, included in its program seven documentaries made by Ukrainian directors or dedicated to Ukraine.

These are “Maidan” by Sergei Loznitsa (co-production Ukraine, Netherlands), “Novorossiya” by Enrico Parenti and Luca Gennari (Italy), “Outside” by Olha Zhurba (Ukraine, Denmark, Netherlands), “The Earth is Blue as an Orange” by Iryna Tsilyk (Ukraine, Lithuania), “The Treasures of Crimea” by Oeke Hoogendijk (Netherlands), “This Rain Will Never Stop” by Alina Gorlova (Ukraine, Germany, Lithuania) and “A House Made of Splinters” by Simon Lereng Wilmont (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine).

As the organizers of the festival say: “Before the Russian invasion, Ukraine was sadly underrepresented in Western media. We have selected a number of strong films that, with a view from both the outside and the inside, focus on life in the independent state that is now threatened by Putin’s regime.”

During the discussion, after screening of the Danish film “A House Made of Splinters”, which tells the stories of children from an orphanage in the East of Ukraine, Ambassador of Ukraine to Denmark Mykhailo Vydoinyk addressed the attendees with a short speech. He cited the gruesome statistics of children killed, wounded and abducted by Russia, and also mentioned hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian mothers along with their children who fled bombed Ukrainian cities. “Like the characters in the movie, they are now looking for a temporary shelter. European countries have become such a shelter for many of them. Temporary shelter. But a place where they can feel safe. Where they can wait out the war, continue to live and hope that the Ukrainian army will fight back the enemy,” the Ukrainian Ambassador said.

On the penultimate day of the festival, on 2 April, it will be possible to watch the films “Outside” (12:00, Dagmar Teatret), “This Rain Will Never Stop” (16:45, Cinemateket), “Novorossiya” (17:15, Charlottenborg Art Cinema) and “A House Made of Splinters” (19:15, Grand Teatret). Another screening of the film “A House Made of Splinters” will take place on 6 April (17:30, Empire Cinema). Also, each of these films can be viewed through the streaming platform (paid rental for three days).
