105 years ago, on 22 January 1918, the Ukrainian People’s Republic declared independence and began the struggle for the right to be “an independent and sovereign state of the Ukrainian people”. This fact alone destroys the assertion of Russian propaganda that “the Ukrainian state did not exist, but was invented by the Bolsheviks”.

The proclamation on 22 January 1919 of the unity of the Ukrainian People’s Republic of Ukraine and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic is a historical act of unification in one state of the Ukrainian lands that were previously divided by the borders of the empires of that time.

The Unity of Ukraine is the unification of all lands inhabited by a certain nation on a continuous territory into one state entity, the spiritual consolidation of all citizens of the state, regardless of nationality. The Unity of Ukraine is also the territorial integrity of the State. Therefore, liberation of Ukrainian lands from the Russian occupier is our common goal.

The idea of unity was and remains a national value of the Ukrainian people, and in the current realities of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the idea of Unity is a prerequisite for the success of our resistance to Moscow’s external aggression.

Today, we are united in defending the independence of our State. Today, for Ukraine, unity means the liberation of all its territories captured by Russia, restoration of unity with Donetsk region, Luhansk region and Crimea.

Soviet and later Russian propaganda always imposed the belief that Ukrainians are divided into “Easterners” and “Westerners”. However, in the present struggle against Russian aggression, we have proven our solidarity and common desire to live in a free state that determines its own future. Ukrainians understood that it is extremely important to remain monolithic in the fight against the enemy.

Ukrainian independence was defeated by the Bolsheviks more than 100 years ago. Today, the Russian Federation again tries to destroy Ukrainian statehood and seize our lands. However, Ukraine continues its struggle for independence. And Unity remains a priority of Ukraine’s national interests. We are clearly aware that the integrity of our State will be completely restored only after Ukraine liberates all the territories captured by the Russian invaders.

This year’s celebration of the Day of Unity of Ukraine is held under the slogan “Ukraine is United. Together to the Victory!”. And it’s true, we will win.
