Today is the day of the fundamental law of our state – the Constitution of Ukraine.

The adoption of the Constitution is called the last chord in the symphony of the state formation. The bible of legal commandments for all Ukrainians. Legal shield and armour of the rights and freedoms of man and citizen.

The Constitution of Ukraine was not adopted immediately. 5 years after the declaration of Independence, Ukraine lived without a Constitution – this is the longest period among the post-Soviet countries.

The Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the 2^nd legislature, despite political differences, 15 different drafts of the fundamental law, six thousand amendments and a continuous sitting that lasted for more than 24 hours, reached unity and on 28 June 1996 adopted the long-awaited Constitution of Ukraine after all.

Compared with the centuries-old constitutions of many states, our fundamental law is very young. However, the international community has called our Constitution one of the most democratic and human-centred. This indicates that our young Constitution is mature and wise at the same time.

The first article of the Constitution begins with the word “Ukraine”. And that′s saying a lot. Its second article begins with the word “sovereignty”. And the third article – with the word “man”. And that says even more. Especially now, when Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom with the Russian occupiers.

Our duty is to protect our Constitution, knowing how difficult that was to adopt it, and also to unconditionally adhere to its provisions for the sake of a peaceful and happy future of our State.
